DIY Wind Power

Wind generated power is perhaps the most credible of all the alternative energy gathering methods. Systems to harness the winds power have been around for as long as man began to explore the planet on sailing ships.  The Dutch are famous for their Windmills that ground up grain and pumped water in Western Europe.  Today most of the wind powered projects are on a large scale.  Wind farms are sprinkled around the country where they produce commercial quantities of power.  There are more residential systems coming online every year.  The homemade DIY wind power generator is becoming a common sight in rural communities across the country.

The principle that governs wind power generation is fairly simple.  The wind must reach a speed that will turn the blades on the turbine.  This will in turn spin a magnet generator that will make power,  DC power.  You need to convert it to AC power with an inverter. The faster the wind blows the faster your generator turns and the more power you capture.  The larger the blades on your turbine the more electricity you can produce.

There are some limiting factors that you need to consider before you begin your DIY wind power generator project.  You need to have wind.  Sounds simple but you need to have approximately 5 – 15 miles an hour average wind speed as a general rule depending on the type of turbine you will be spinning, how high your system is mounted, how large the blades are and how many blades you have. For the maximum efficiency of your system you should mount your turbine at least thirty feet above any trees around your area and add another ten feet for your turbine’s blades.  The ground produces drag and turbulence on the surrounding winds and slows it down.  Ideally you would install your wind generator at least sixty feet high on a tower.

If you are located in a rural area with good wind and the cost of bringing power into your land is prohibitive then you should be considering wind power generation.  You can easily power your home and several surrounding homes with one large wind turbine.  If you are on the grid already then you are in luck.  Any excess power that you have generated can flow back out to the street and the power company will deliver a nice check for all of your help.

As with solar power generation for your home the DIY wind power gatherer should consider a hybrid system of solar electric, solar thermal and wind generated power collection.  That way when the wind is blowing hard in the winter but the sun is not out or at night you are still making juice.  Conversely,  when the wind is gone in the summer months but the sun is shining you are still collecting energy.
